Cemeteries in NSW
CEMETERIES in NSW can be broadly divided into three categories:
- Cemeteries under the Administration of the Minister for Lands under the Crown Lands Act - eg. Macquarie Park Cemetery & Crematorium
These cemeteries are on Crown Land for which a honorary Trust Board has been appointed and is responsible for the care, control and management of the land.
Trust cemeteries are a not-for-profit organisation responsible to the Department of Lands to ensure that they are effectively and efficiently administered.
Interment rights are mostly issued in perpetuity however it is best for families to check with individual cemeteries.
- Cemeteries under the Administration of the Minister for Local Government
Across NSW many other cemeteries are on Crown Land however the care, control and management of these has been vested in the relevant local Councils as the Trustee
- Private Cemeteries
There are a number of large corporate cemeteries in the Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle areas owned by a public company listed on the Stock Exchange - these are not controlled by the NSW Government.
