Making and preserving our community’s history

Development of this historic Sydney cemetery has been a continual process since the early 1920’s. The Trust continue to maintain a significant schedule of works that will ensure that Macquarie Park’s facilities carry on serving the evolving needs of our diverse community with trust, dignity and compassion.
Macquarie Park makes and preserves history every day, creating a permanent record of Australia’s developing society for almost a century. Here are a few notable milestones in the park’s historic record.
Macquarie Park’s Historic Milestones
- 1902 Dedication of Northern Suburbs General Cemetery (now Macquarie Park)
- 1922 April 20th, the cemetery’s first burial Henry Mashman, C of E area (G1 Grave No. 5.)
- 1954 Opening of NSW’s first Catholic and General Lawn burial areas
- 1985 Erection of Jewish Ohel
- 1988 Erection of Armenian open air chapel
- 1993 Closing Delhi Road access and opening new Plassey Road entrance
- 1999 Catholic and General Lawn areas completely refurbished
- 1999 Christ the Redeemer Mausoleum opened
- 1999 Name changed to Macquarie Park Cemetery
- 2000 Stations of the Cross area opened
- 2001 New administration office complex completed
- 2001 The Returned and Services League (RSL) site established
- 2002 Major extension to Governors Boulevard
- 2003 Touch screen installed
- 2004 Crematorium opening ceremony November 23rd
- 2004 Name changed to Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium
- 2004 Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney approves the burial of cremains in the Garden of Stations of the Cross of deceased who have not embraced the Catholic faith
- 2005 Joint dedication of Catholic, Anglican and Protestant lawn burial area
- 2008 Macquarie Park upgrades first Internet site
- 2008 Relocation of 1932 Canary Island Palms from Delhi Road
- 2008 Opening of Ascension Hill Gardens by Maxine McKew, MP Member for Bennelong
- 2009 Commissioning of North Ryde station, completing the Park’s metropolitan railway link.
- 2010-2011 Refurbishment of the Chapels decor and audiovisual equipment.
