Sending Flowers - your tribute of love and respect

The natural beauty of flowers at a funeral and at the home of mourners brings a sense of warmth and comfort to the environment. A potted plant has obvious symbolic meaning because it will continue to live and grow.

Flowers remain a popular way people express their love for the deceased and concern for members of the family. Within Macquarie Park’s Cafe building you will be delighted to find a specialist on-site funereal florist.

This ever popular meeting place retails fresh cut flowers, fitting funeral tributes, a selection of condolence and memorial cards, plus a range of exquisite candles and tasteful grave accessories. The Macquarie Park Florist is open every day between 9am and 4pm, enquiries and telephone orders can be placed direct by phoning 02 9889 3899.

Though not mandatory, flowers remain the most popular and traditional way most people express their love for the deceased and concern for members of the family. Flowers can be ordered from Macquarie Park’s on-site specialist florist and delivered direct to the funeral chapel prior to the associated service, alternatively flowers can be sent to family members’ homes, but never to the funeral directors.

Traditional funeral flower arrangements

Funeral flowers are generally categorised by their function; here are a few of the more popular and traditional arrangements to avoid confusion when ordering:

  • Wreaths -  Usually circular arrangements that represent eternal life.
  • Floral arrangements -  Any style, in a basket or container.
  • Sheaths -   Cut flowers gathered on a bouquet and wrapped,
  • Sprays -  Arrangements that are viewed from one side only.
  • Casket sprays -  Customarily organised by family members to sit on the casket’s top.
  • Inside pieces -  Small floral sprays that are placed inside the casket, usually at a viewing.

There are also specialised wreaths for military remembrance and certain religious festivals, the Macquarie Park Florist can assist you with the most appropriate tribute styles

Choosing the Right Flowers

Certain varieties of flowers and their colours can send messages that are more specific, the Macquarie Park Florist will be able to provide details and confirm the availability of certain seasonal blooms.

Sometimes flowers are not appropriate

There are some instances when flowers are not appropriate, particularly when the family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers. Although flowers are freely accepted by many religions and cultures, it is worth remembering that there are some which do not traditionally receive flowers at funerals, such as the Jewish and Islamic faiths.

Jewish law has always demanded immediate burial - within three days - so flowers were never deemed necessary. To this day it has never been customary to send any flowers, although they are not forbidden and some Jews have begun sending them for Reformed Jewish funerals. Instead, it is customary to send fruit and food baskets to the home of the bereaved during their mourning period.

At Islamic funerals some people send flowers and some don’t. It is, however, common to place individual flowers on graves along with palm branches and other greenery. Flowers are not a traditional part of Hindu funerals, but they are not unwelcome.

Refer to the funeral etiquette page for more information on appropriate floral tributes.
